The T1 is very fast, since the best match is usually found within seconds. A couple of early builders had apparently found that the components in the r1 SWR bridge warmed up a bit too much under certain conditions, so Elecraft produced a modification, substituting some higher wattage resistors and adding an extra toroid core to beef up one of the transformers.

Yaesu should have built something like this into the FT in the first place. It’s also worth bearing in mind that, because it uses the FT’s CAT port, you can’t use this adapter and connect the radio to a computer at the same time. It is a kit, it is fun to build, it works good, it has excelent documentation, it is relatively cheap and it has open design with no secrets except maybe the firmware. The tip carries the data about the band, the ring is used to trigger a retune of the ATU and the sleeve is the ground. I would retune until the swr went as low as possible.

When the band changes, it turns on the T1 and sends it band information, allowing the antenna to be automatically tuned to the new band. When that is done, the green LED begins to blink for 3 seconds and, if one begins to elecrwft during this time, the T1 will start to re-tune.
