Many themes are explored in the novel – the welfare ‘sub-class’, child abuse, fostering of children and the many shortcomings of the child protection system in Victoria although it could be any Australian state in the s. I also thought that the original victim in tbis story quickly became a bit second hand to the stories of the other characters One of the most incredible aspects of Ghost Child is that you often forget that this is fiction, it isn’t a biographical account of a real crime.

In5-year-old Jacob Cashman is sent to the store together with his younger brother Harley to buy cigarettes for his mother.
New boyfriend, only on the scene 6wks with no job who spends all day getting high and has been known to slap the kids around already. When the local one is questioned and has no memory of the children at all, the police are aware that there are glaring holes in the story.
Doesn’t matter if they are drug abusers or prostitutes or paedophiles, but when you want to adopt they put you through hoops, like infertility makes you less capable of being a parent. Her latest novel, published in Octoberis called Matilda is Missing. Mostly it was because read the prologue, you’ve pretty much read the whole book.

Interesting subject matter and plot, but it took too cgild to get to the point and then it was rushed. Jan 11, Faye rated it it was amazing. In terms of time and place, the author really gets the era and location spot on, with the many voices in the novel backing this up very well.
I personally really enjoyed reading all the different voices from characters such as a social worker, a foster mother, a reporter and a police officer, but also the Cashman family. Immediately suspicious eyes turn to the mother — only 26, 4 children to 3 different fathers, none of whom are in the picture. Although the case is gradually forgotten, it is suddenly thrust back into the spotlight almost 30 years later when the sister of the victim faces court on an unrelated manner.

The Big Reveal at the end didn’t work for me, I admit. Jake passes away the next day from his injuries, caused by blunt force trauma and the surgeon admits that he has noticed indications of other abuse, older wounds that have healed, probably without medical assistance.
Review – GHOST CHILD, Caroline Overington
A very simple clear writing style. I couldn’t put this book down! I Came To Say Goodbyean earlier work by this author, is excellent chil. Twenty years later, Lauren, who is a nurse’s aide, is part of another court case.
Lauren, one of the other children in the family, is now grown up. The different perspectives, not to mention the different voices, really keep the story going and you get to piece ghoxt, bit by bit, what happened that day and why it matters now. I enjoyed reading this book.
But I stuck with it and found elements quite beautiful and sad.
