Even though this book havdix practically lifeless, I persisted in reading it so that I could have this review done plus, I hate it when I don’t finish a book. Like it, but wasn’t blown away. The characters are vibrant, from daring Ella, to evil Madame Bisset, to handsome Charming, to kindly Jed.
We all know the classical tale of Cinderella or in this book Cinders-Ellaso I’m not going to restate it for you. Or will she just die in the dungeon?

Mary-a sweet maid that Ella makes friends with and she really pulls through for Ella. I give this book a 3. The guy encourages Ella to talk to the prince in the hopes of ingratiating himself in the prince’s good books and as his wallet – he encourages Ella to sweet talk him in bed. She made her own destiny into one that she could have never had if she went through with her marriage to the prince, and even though she could probably never go back to that part of the kingdom, she was better off for it.
And these geniuses are supposed to be running the country? It’s not otherwise relevant to this book, and its definitely not young adult, but if you like Cinderella, and you have any liking for Victorian fiction, you should definitely check that one out. This is the only book I’ve read in a good long while that I’ve genuinely disliked; I was surprised to realize this is by the same author who wrote the Shadow Children series, which I’ve never read but have heard good things about. The Prince-a man we find out cannot put his own shoes on or formulate his own thoughts let alone. Most of the side characters were intentionally horrible to Ella and they’re mean in the most ridiculous ways. This book haddiix an all-time favorite.
With the help of Mary, Ella digs her way out of the cell through the hole that serves as a toilet, steals some supplies and her father’s books from Lucille’s house, and makes her way to Jed’s refugee camp, which he was given permission to build after Ella’s imprisonment so he would not learn what happened to her.
All in all, I recommend to everyone of all ages, genders, colours and beliefs. Why doesn’t Ella like being a queen? A feminist retelling of Cinderella, that could have used a more likable Cinderella and a more plausible plot, but that proved itself to be an entertaining read. What’s that good for? There was no “fairy godmother or magic. He is so intellectually stunted that he freaks out and ties her up, then tells his keepers because nobody has ever told him no before.
